The St Petersburg area has a very broad professional sports base. There are a wide variety of sports in here and ini the surrounding areas. Being that St Petersburg is an up and coming city, it is finally starting to solidify a fan base for sports teams in the area. These teams include the NFL Team Tampa Bay Bucaneers, Florida State Seminoles, and the University of Florida Gators. Below are some up to date sports news stories from St Petersburg, FL and the surrounding area.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers have little depth at receiver
Based on interviews with coach Raheem Morris and others during the first two weeks of workouts, if the Bucs played a game today, their four active receivers would likely be Antonio Bryant, Michael Clayton, rookie Sammie Stroughter and CFL refugee Kelly Campbell.
No wonder somebody in the organization reportedly telephoned ex- Giant Plaxico Burress. The conversation was exploratory. After all, Burress still faces 3½ years in prison on weapon charges in New York. He also could be suspended by the NFL after accidentally shooting himself in the leg last year at a Manhattan nightclub.
Florida State’s Mike Martin named ACC baseball coach of the year
Florida State’s Mike Martin, whose team rebounded from a sluggish start to earn the No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament, was named the league’s baseball coach of the year. Mike Martin has earned that award five other times — 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2007 — but perhaps no other was more fitting given how much his young Florida State team improved. And how quickly. At one point, the Seminoles were 9-7 and 1-3 in the ACC. They enter Wednesday’s league tournament 40-14, including 19-9 in the ACC.
Meanwhile, sophomore outfielder Tyler Holt (.402, 74 runs, 31 stolen bases) and freshman pitcher Sean Gilmartin (10-2, 3.71 ERA) were named first team all-ACC. Junior second baseman Jason Stidham, junior shortstop Stephen Cardullo and utility player Mike McGee (a sophomore outfielder and starting pitcher) were named second team all-ACC.
